Mean, Median, Mode & Range:
(the measures of central tendencies.)
Mean:
- Mean means average.
- To calculate it, you add together all of the numbers in your data set. Then divide that sum by the number of addends.
Example:
data_set = [5, 6, 8, 5]
Mean = (5 + 6 + 8 + 5) / 4 = 6
Median:
The middle number when listed in order from least to greatest.First Example:
data_set = [5, 4, 9, 12, 7]
data_set_ordered = [4, 5, 7, 9, 12]
Median = 7
Second Example:
data_set = [5, 4, 9, 12, 7, 15]
data_set_ordered = [4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15]
Median = (7 + 9 ) / 2 = 8
Mode:
The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number in the list is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.
Example:
data_set = [5, 6, 8, 5]
Mode = 5
data_set = [5, 6, 8, 5]
Mode = 5
Range:
The range of a list of numbers is just the difference between the largest and smallest values.
Example:
data_set = [5, 4, 9, 12, 7, 15]
data_set_ordered = [4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15]
Range = 15 - 4 = 11
Range = 15 - 4 = 11
